Whats Happening

-Prevention Works Best-

Imagine that you have just discovered how genetic factors contribute to human disease. Although your discovery is certain to be a medical breakthrough that will aid an incalculable number of Canadians, you have been advised that in order to receive government approval, you must first deliver your scientific research to Ottawa. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, has seven conditions.

First, you must travel by automobile – you are not allowed to discover thriftier or speedier modes of travel. Second, you cannot use a roadmap or compass to guide you. Third, you are forbidden from using any kind of measurement (city street names or highway signs) that would aid you in determining your progress. Fourth, you will only be afforded enough funds to buy one tank of gas at a time. Fifth, you will not have enough savings to bank. Sixth, you will not have enough money for preventative car maintenance. And lastly, should you ever find yourself doubting your direction; you cannot use your personal vision, core values, principles, or beliefs to guide you.

This is an impossible mission that few of us would ever consider. Regrettably though, this is precisely the situation that is manifested when organizations continually neglect to pay attention to developing comprehensive strategic plans, operational framework, business plans, and organizational metrics of measure.

Having spent my career working in the non-profit, business, and government sectors, I have come to know that every organization must be more than the sum of their parts. Non-profits in particular must be skilled at managing a wide network of private and public partnerships bringing new ideas, resources, financial capacity, people and opportunities to their mission.

For sceptics who looked the other way while the non-profit sector engaged in a vigorous dialogue articulating the necessity to bolster our capacity building skill-sets, we need look no further than the havoc brought to bear by the recent global recession to appreciate the wisdom in the message that was being advanced by yesteryears leadership. The call that went out through the non-profit sector over two decades ago encouraging organizations to investment both time and resources towards building a comprehensive strategic framework was a forewarning to become forearmed. Prevention works best!
