Wills
We have Information & Referral Counsellors at the 411 Seniors Centre who can assist seniors in preparing a simple will or codicil, an amendment to a will. A simple will is one that is straightforward, does not include complicated investment, and has little or no property to dispose of.
Procedures for Having a Simple Will Prepared
Please call ahead to 604-684-8171 find out when a counsellor who does wills is available.
Meeting 1: The client meets with an I&R Counsellor to complete a will or codicil form. The form will then be typed into a template. Please note that there is a two-week processing period. The client will be asked to call after two weeks, no sooner, to see if their will or codicil is ready to be picked up.
Meeting 2: The client meets again with the I&R Counsellor to review the typed will or codicil, and to make any changes. Please note that if changes are required, there is another two-week processing period as above. The client will be asked to call and return in another two weeks. If the will or codicil is satisfactory, the client and the I&R Counsellor discuss getting two people together to witness the client’s signature to finalize the will or codicil. Examples of witnesses are family members, friends, a doctor or minister. Anyone named in a will or codicil should not be a witness. Generally, staff or volunteers of 411 will not witness wills. The client then takes the will with them to finalize. The 411 Seniors Centre does not keep copies of wills.
